In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will explore the unique hardware and software features of laptops and portable devices.

  1. Locate and describe to the instructor components found on the outside of a laptop computer
  2. Show how to remove and replace the battery on a laptop computer
  3. Remove and explore the RAM and hard drive access panels
  4. Describe in your lab notebook how the upgrade and expansion options differ on laptops and desktops
  5. Locate and check the power management and/or ACPI settings in the BIOS
  6. Explore the power options control panel in Microsoft Windows
  7. Describe in your lab notebook the difference between the standby and hibernate sleep states of the Windows operating system
  8. Test various laptop display configurations including laptop only, external monitor only, and both displays active
  9. Explore changes in display resolution on both the laptop LCD and external monitor
  10. Reset all settings to their original configuration
