Franske ITC-2000 Printer Lab

Local Printing

In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will setup, configure and test a printer or all-in-one device on an ITC department Windows 7 laptop.

1. Check out one of the ITC laptops from the laptop cart and bring it back to your workspace along with one of the printers from the cart.
2. Find the user manual for your printer model online and download any appropriate drivers for the printer onto the laptop.
3. Install and configure the printer or all-in-one device you are using
4. Create a Windows test printout from your printer or all-in-one device
5. Show how to remove and replace the toner or ink cartridge from your device
6. Determine if your printer device has any expandability options such as additional RAM slots or networking capability. Find and locate these slots if they exist, the manual may be of assistance in locating these.
7. Determine if the device itself can create a test printout (independent of Windows or having a driver installed). If it can, create a test printout from the device itself which details the device specifications and features. If your device cannot make a self-test printout you can research the classroom lab printer and use the menu on the printer to create a test page from that printer.
8. Remove the printer driver and/or any other related software which you installed for this lab from the laptop.
9. Return the printer to the cart

Network Printing 1: Direct Printer Connection

In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will learn about network printing. For this lab all computers should be set to receive DHCP addresses and connected to the ITCnet (not campus) network. You may need to do some network troubleshooting as part of this lab.

1. For this portion of the lab you will need to connect your laptop to the "ITCnet" network (the yellow network jack in B109) and be set to receive an address automatically. You will also need to setup one of your lab PCs to connect to the ITCnet network and start your Windows 7 VM on that system.
2. Try pinging the IP address of the network printer (172.17.110.20) from the laptop to make sure that you have connectivity.
3. Try visiting the IP address of the printer in a web browser and see what information you can obtain.
4. Install the lab networked printer on your laptop and print a test page. The printer is physically located in the CNT Lab Prep Room (B120) and printouts can be picked up there.

Network Printing 2: Windows Printer Sharing

1. Install one of the lab printers on one of the lab PCs using a direct connection (Parallel, USB, etc.) You may need to download drivers, etc. to complete this task.
2. Share the printer using Windows built-in file and printer sharing capability
3. Install the printer as a network printer on another computer in the lab and print a test page over the network from that computer.
4. Remove and uninstall any printer drivers from the computer.
