In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will learn about and setup basic computer security.

  1. Download Microsoft Security Essentials as well as the latest virus definitions to your USB drive and then install them on a CNT-2300 lab computer.
    1. Note that virus definitions for offline installation can be found on the Microsoft Security Portal site: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/
  2. Explore the settings for Microsoft Security Essentials including scheduled scans.
  3. Connect your CNT-2300 lab system to the Internet
  4. Use a web browser to visit www.eicar.org from your CNT-2300 system and attempt to download and run the eicar.com antivirus test file and see what happens
  5. Explore the Windows Update process including automatic and manual updating
  6. Download the Windows Defender Offline scanning software and install it to a USB thumb drive or burn it to a CD. Boot the USB thumb drive or CD and explore the offline scanning functions.
