In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will install and explore Windows XP using advanced installation tools and virtualization technologies.

  1. Download and unpack the self-extracting archive version of the nLite Windows installation tool.
  2. Copy the contents of a Windows XP installation CD to a new folder named "Windows XP Install Files" on your D drive
  3. Use the nLite program to create a fully automated "Unattended" installation Bootable ISO file with the following options, you will need to select "Unattended", "Tweaks" and "Bootable ISO" from the nLite task selection menu
    • Pre-filled Product Key
    • Classic Start Menu
    • Administrator account password "College1"
    • Create a custom user account and password
    • Set the Full Name to "CNT System" and "IHCC" for the Organization
    • Make the computer a member of the "CNT-B120" workgroup
    • The computer name will be "B120-xx" where xx is your computer number assigned by the instructor
    • Select the correct timezone
    • Set to automatically download and install updates
    • Use classic logon page
    • Show hidden files and folders
    • Show extensions of known file-types
  4. Save the new unattended ISO to the D drive with your name and year
  5. Create a new VMWare Virtual Machine in a folder with your name and year on the D drive
    • 512 MB of RAM
    • 10 GB hard drive
    • Bridged network connection
  6. Setup your new virtual machine by booting from your unattended ISO installation
  7. Boot your new virtual machine and install the VMWare extensions/drivers
  8. Explore the services running on your system (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)
  9. Add a scheduled task to run the Disk Cleanup program once sometime in the next five minutes
  10. Explore the system restore utility (Start -> Programs > Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore)
  11. Download and install a free antivirus program inside your virtual machine
  12. Download and install the Firefox web browser inside your virtual machine
  13. Run at least one round of Windows Updates on your virtual machine
  14. Shutdown your virtual machine
  15. Delete the ISO file and the Windows Setup files from your D drive
