Computer Information Systems

CIS 0090 Digital Literacy

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Introduces basic computer concepts and skills so that people can use computer technology in everyday life to develop new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Whether you are entirely new to computing or have some experience, this course will help you develop a fundamental understanding of computers. The Digital Literacy course helps you develop the essential skills you need to begin computing with confidence.

CIS 1000 Computer Careers

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Introduce the wide variety of jobs available in computing and information technology. Includes discussion of educational requirements, work environments and typical positions for many careers including programmers, developers, network administrators, systems administrators, security analysts, information technology managers and others. Students will develop a plan of study for their career of interest. Recommended for students considering a career related to computers and information technology.

CIS 1102 Microsoft Word for Personal Use

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS1101 or Equivalent

Introduces features such as creating, saving, editing, and printing documents. The skills learned can be transferred to other word processing software packages. The student will focus on those features of WordPerfect 5.1 that will be used for creating papers, reports, and correspondence. Students will learn to use WordPerfect 5.1 software. The skills learned can be transferred to other word processing software packages.

CIS 1105 Microsoft Windows

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Includes a study of Windows fundamentals such as the basic manipulation of a window, saving, opening, closing, and printing files; Windows Explorer; Control Panel; Searching; Help; desktop customization; and Windows Accessories. Basic hardware and software terms will be covered, as well as identification and use of common hardware components. This is a hands-on course designed for the computer novice.

CIS 1110 Microsoft Word

3 credits; 3 lecture hours a week.

Prereq: CIS0090 or Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification

Covers word processing skills using Microsoft Word. Students will learn the basic and advanced tools for creating, editing, and formatting documents. In addition, students will learn to customize Word, automate word processing tasks using macros, and create online forms using content controls.

Course Note: The prerequisite for this course will be waived upon proof of passing a digital literacy placement test, contact instructor for details.

CIS 1130 Intro to Excel

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS0090 or Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification

Introduces how to create spreadsheets using Excel. It focuses on techniques for creating, editing, formatting, and maintaining a spreadsheet efficiently. Students will learn to sort and manipulate data using formulas and functions. Students will also learn to create and modify charts in Excel.

CIS 1131 Intermediate Excel

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS1130 or CS1100 or consent from instructor

Introduces advanced features in Microsoft Excel. Students will learn to capture, format, calculate, analyze, and present data using advanced formulas, PivotTables and PivotCharts. Students will also learn to manage data ranges, tables, multiple workbooks, and automate tasks using macros.

CIS 1135 Microsoft PowerPoint

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS0090 or Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification

Introduces how to design, manage, and modify professional-looking presentations using PowerPoint. Students will learn how to apply the powerful tools provided by PowerPoint to create and format slides. Students will also learn how to enhance presentations using graphics, video, and audio files.

CIS 1150 Intro to Access

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS0090 or Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification

Introduces how to create and maintain a database using Access. Topics include relational database concepts, building and customizing tables, creating queries, and constructing basic forms and reports.

CIS 1151 Intermediate Access

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week

Prereq: CIS1150 or consent from instructor

Covers advanced form and report construction using Microsoft Access. Students will learn to use form tools to create custom forms, design reports; and maintain a database using advanced queries. Student will also perform basic data analysis using PivotTables.


CIS 1152 Access Application Development

2 credits; 2 lecture hours a week.

This course will focus on Access application development tools including switchboard, macros, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Topics include documentation, SQL, complex forms/reports, error trapping, using ActiveX controls, introduction to object models including DAO and ADO, and securing a database. Students will create an original Access development project using a variety of techniques/tools.

CIS 1160 Project Management Software

2 credits; 2 lecture hours a week.

Prereq: Working Knowledge of Windows. Concurrent enrollment in BUS 2320 recommended.

Uses Microsoft Project to introduce project management theory and applications. Topics in this course include: creating a project to include task definition and dependencies; examinations of critical path, constraints, and earned value; allocation of resources; assigning resources and project costs; tracking progress; and sharing of project information.

CIS 1200 Computer Security Awareness

1 credit; 1 lecture hour a week.

Prereq: CIS0090 or Microsoft Digital Literacy Certification

Provides an opportunity to work with common security threats and issues, as well as ways to counteract them. In today's organizational environment, almost every role involves working with computers in some manner. Recent events indicate that security breaches can happen with almost any computer user, at home or office.

CIS 1400 Windows Operating Systems Fundamentals

3 credits; 2 classroom hours a week, 2 lecture hours a week.

Examines the fundamental functions of the Windows Operating System and prepares the student for the Microsoft Technology Associate Windows Operating Systems Fundamentals certification. Student may test out of this course by completing the Microsoft Technology Associate Windows Operating Systems Fundamentals Certification.

CIS 1500 Database Management Systems

3 credits; 3 lecture hours a week.

Prereq: CS1100 or equivalent experience; CIS 1150 recommended

Explores issues related to the design, development, and use of computer databases. Topics covered include: database models, database design methodologies, data normalization, SQL instruction, and implementation issues. Students develop databases using several database products, which may include Access and SQL Server.

CIS 2189 Internship: Information Tech

2-4 credits

Prereq: Permission of instructor, available position, approval of sponsor

Provides a supervised work experience with computer and information systems oriented toward projects utilizing skills and knowledge in programming languages, database development, management information systems, or related computer science functions. The experience is intended to result in new learning and increased capabilities for the intern and the completion of authentic work for the sponsoring organization. Internships may be arranged for 2, 3 or 4 credits upon the mutual agreement of the student, instructor and sponsoring organization. Placement depends on student qualifications and a successful interview for a particular position. Interns are required to abide by all policies governing employees and meet expectations of regular employment.

CIS 2207 Web Publishing with FrontPage

1 credit; 1 lectur hour a week.

Prereq: Knowledge of Windows and the Internet

Introduces Web page development for non-programmers, using Microsoft FrontPage. Text, images, tables, frames, forms, and hyperlinks will be incorporated into page designs that will be published on the Web.

CIS 2210 Introduction to Macromedia Flash

2 credits; 2 lecture hours a week.

Prereq: Previous knowledge of Windows operating system and use of a microcomputer. Previous experience in Web page authoring software recommended such as CIS 2207

Introduces the software Macromedia Flash, which is a graphics package used to create and add animations to Web pages. Topics include: creating and manipulating shapes, working with colors, inserting text, using layers, creating basic animations, using interactivity, including sound objects, and publishing to the Web. This course is intended for the student who wishes to add animations or a higher level of interactivity to Web pages.

CIS 2280 Special Topics in Computer Information Systems

1-4 credits; 1-4 lecture hours a week.

Prereq: To be determined by the specialized topic and published in the class schedule

Studies new and emerging computer information systems topics, systems, software packages, applications, management tools, and problem solving approaches. Specialized topics and applications will be determined in advance by the instructor and published in the class schedule.
