In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will learn about network printing. There are two parts to this lab and a limited number of printers available for each part so if you are unable to complete part one you can move on to part two and then come back to part one. For this lab all computers should be set to receive DHCP addresses and connected to the CNTnet (not campus) network. You may need to do some network troubleshooting as part of this lab.
- Part I: Windows Printer Sharing
- Install one of the lab printers on one of the lab PCs using a direct connection (Parallel, USB, etc.) You may need to download drivers, etc. to complete this task.
- Share the printer using Windows built-in file and printer sharing capability
- Install the printer as a network printer on another computer in the lab and print a test page over the network from that computer.
- Remove and uninstall any printer drivers from the computer.
- Part II: Networked Printer
- For this portion of the lab you will need to connect your lab system to the "CNTnet" network (the green network jack in B107) and be set to receive an address automatically. The IP address of the networked printer will be 172.17.110.20
- Try pinging the printer to make sure that you have connectivity, try visiting the IP address of the printer in a web browser and see what information you can obtain.
- Install the lab networked printer on your computer and print a test page. The printer is physically located in the CNT Lab Prep Room (B120) and printouts can be picked up there.
- Share the networked printer to other computers through Windows Printer Sharing as would be done with a dedicated print server.
- Connect to the networked printer from another computer in the lab through your "print server" computer and print a test page.
- Remove any ports you have added to the system as well as any printer drivers and remove the printer from the computer.
