In this lab students, working in partners or small groups, will install and explore Windows XP using advanced installation tools and virtualization technologies.
- Download and unpack the self-extracting archive version of the nLite Windows installation tool.
- If you have questions about how to use nLite refer to the online usage guide.
- Copy the contents of a Windows XP installation CD to a new folder named "Windows XP Install Files" in the "CNT Student VMs" folder on your computer.
- Use the nLite program to create a fully automated "Unattended" installation Bootable ISO file with the following options, you will need to select "Unattended", "Tweaks" and "Bootable ISO" from the nLite task selection menu
- Classic Start Menu
- Administrator account password "College1"
- Create a custom user account and password
- Set the Full Name to "CNT System" and "IHCC" for the Organization
- Make the computer a member of the "CNT-B120" workgroup
- The computer name will be "B120-xx" where xx is your computer number assigned by the instructor
- Select the correct timezone
- Set to automatically download and install updates
- Use classic logon page
- Show hidden files and folders
- Show extensions of known file-types
- Save the new unattended ISO to the "CNT Student VMs" folder on your computer with your name and year
- Create a new Virtual Machine in a folder with your name and year in the CNT Student VMs folder on your computer.
- 512 MB of RAM
- 10 GB hard drive
- Bridged network connection
- Setup your new virtual machine by booting from your unattended ISO installation
- Boot your new virtual machine and install the virtual machine additions/extensions/drivers
- Explore the services running on your system (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)
- Add a scheduled task to run the Disk Cleanup program once sometime in the next five minutes
- Explore the system restore utility (Start -> Programs > Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore)
- Download and install a free antivirus program inside your virtual machine
- Download and install the Firefox web browser inside your virtual machine
- Run at least one round of Windows Updates on your virtual machine
- Shutdown your virtual machine
- Delete the ISO file and the Windows Setup files from the "CNT Student VMs" folder
