	Introduces students to the overall technology and design of networks. The course ~~focuses on~~ network terminology and protocols, ~~local-area networks (LANs), wide-area networks (WANs), Open System Interconnection (OSI)~~ models, ~~cabling, cabling tools, routers, router programming, Ethernet~~, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, and ~~network standards~~. ~~Networking Essentials~~ is the first of ~~the~~ four courses ~~leading to~~ the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) ~~designation~~.		Introduces students to the overall technology and design of networks. The course covers network terminology and protocols, models for describing network communication, an introduction to network devices, and network standards. The course also has a significant focus on Internet Protocol (IP) addressing and subnetting. Network Fundamentals is the first in a sequence of four courses focusing on preparation for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. Students taking this course are expected to have fluency in computer operating systems and an understanding of computer hardware and basic networking prior to beginning the course.

			Course Note: The prerequisite for this course will be waived upon proof of passing an operating systems fundamentals examination, contact instructor for details.

			This course will be taught as a hybrid style course with small group pacing. This means that you and your lab partner will be meeting regularly with the instructor during the course time to assess your progress and develop a schedule for assignments which you will be held to. =Lab Hours=
In addition to regularly scheduled class time a lab will be available for your use during during office hours on a first come, first served basis. Open lab time may also be available under the supervision of the lab assistant, see the [[Open Lab Schedule]] wiki page for more information. Students who do not show up for lab hours they have scheduled may be restricted from registering for lab hours in the future.

* Describe the role and basic functioning of primary networking devices equipment
* Define and describe the major variations of network topologies and architectures
* Apply LAN cabling standards and techniques.
* Design and setup a simple LAN.
* Apply essential concepts of networking mathematics to networking tasks such as IP addressing and subnetting
* Articulate the differences between various network cabling media and know how to install this cabling
* Test cabling for LANs and WANs
* Describe essential Ethernet concepts such as 10/100/1000/10 G versions and Ethernet Switching

If assignments are turned in late 10% will be deducted for each day or partial day the assignment is late. The grading of late assignments is given a lower priority and may take longer so students are encouraged to plan ahead and turn in assignments on time. F (or N) = Represents failure (or no credit) and signifies that the work was either (1) completed but at a level of achievement that is not worthy of credit or (2) was not completed and there was no agreement between the instructor and the student that the student would be awarded an I (see also I).

I = (Incomplete) Assigned at the discretion of the instructor when, due to extraordinary circumstances, e.g., hospitalization, a student is prevented from completing the work of the course on time. Requires a written agreement between instructor and student.

==Grading Method and Availability==
Grades for this course are calculated based on a weighted points system. Each assignment, quiz or test is assigned to one of the weighted categories below and is graded on a points system. Your percentage is calculated for each category by dividing the points earned in that category by the points available. Finally, your percentage earned in each category is multiplied by the weight of that category and these are added together. The instructor may round up based on student participation and individual improvement.

Mid-Term grades are not officially distributed but assignment scores are made available in the online grade book and you may calculate your current course grade at any time using the above instructions and weighting.

==Extra Credit==
Students should not rely on extra credit to boost their grade and should instead complete each assignment to the best of their ability. However, from time to time extra credit opportunities may arise at which time they will be announced in class, by email and/or through the course website. Extra credit will be added to the Chapter Homework Assignments category.
